Hoe werkt een elektrische auto?
Aan de buitenkant is een elektrische auto nauwelijks anders dan een benzineauto, maar onderhuids zijn ze compleet anders. Lees hier hoe een elektrische auto werkt, hoe een elektrische auto rijdt en welke elektrische modellen populair zijn.
Elektromotor en accu
In tegenstelling tot een conventionele benzine- of dieselauto rijdt een elektrische auto op elektriciteit. De wielen worden aangedreven door één of meerdere elektromotoren. De elektriciteit komt uit een grote accu die je steeds moet opladen bij een laadpunt.
De accu van een elektrische auto is gemonteerd in de bodem van de auto, in het midden tussen de voor- en achteras. Door het gebruik van een grote platte accu onder de vloer gaat er geen interieurruimte verloren. Bovendien zorgt deze positie voor een optimale gewichtsverdeling en een laag zwaartepunt, wat ten goede komt aan de stabiliteit en rijkwaliteiten van de auto.
De elektromotor die de wielen aandrijft, zit meestal voorin onder de motorkap, zoals je gewend bent. Een elektromotor is alleen compacter dan een doorsnee benzinemotor. Bovendien heeft een elektrische auto geen versnellingsbak nodig. Daarom is de elektromotor meestal direct tussen de wielen gemonteerd. Daarnaast heeft een elektrische auto geen koelsysteem met een radiator nodig, waardoor onder de motorkap veel ruimte overblijft. Sommige automerken benutten deze ruimte onder de motorkap voor een groot bagagevak, ook wel een ‘frunk’ genoemd.
Het is ook relatief eenvoudig om een elektrische auto met vierwielaandrijving te ontwikkelen door simpelweg een elektromotor tussen de achterwielen te plaatsen. In tegenstelling tot een benzineauto met vierwielaandrijving is er geen mechanische verbinding (cardanas) nodig is met de motor voorin. De elektromotoren voor en achter zijn niet met elkaar verbonden en worden onafhankelijk van elkaar aangestuurd.
Hoe rijdt een elektrische auto?
Een elektrische auto rijdt zoals elke andere auto met een automaat. Alleen zonder motorgeluiden dankzij de fluisterstille elektromotor en met een vloeiende acceleratie zonder schakelmomenten vanwege het ontbreken van een versnellingsbak. Daarnaast biedt een elektromotor in verhouding meer trekkracht dan een brandstofmotor. Bovendien is de maximale trekkracht van een elektromotor direct vanaf stilstand al beschikbaar, waardoor de auto sneller reageert op het stroompedaal (het nieuwe ‘gaspedaal’) en vlotter wegtrekt vanuit stilstand. Een brandstofmotor moet eerst op toeren komen om zijn maximale prestaties te leveren.
Regeneratief remmen
Verder kun je met een elektrische auto eenvoudig energie terugwinnen. Elke keer als het stroompedaal wordt losgelaten, fungeert de elektromotor onmiddellijk als generator en wordt de batterij een beetje bijgeladen. Dit heeft een remmende werking, ook wel ‘regeneratief remmen’ genoemd. Afhankelijk van de instellingen remt de auto zelfs zodanig, dat je het rempedaal minder of zelfs helemaal niet hoeft te gebruiken, vooral bij lagere snelheden in stadsverkeer. Doordat je in deze situatie maar één pedaal nodig hebt om te accelereren en remmen, wordt dit ook wel ‘one pedal driving’ genoemd.
