Britten lopen niet warm voor elektrische auto’s

In totaal rijden er in Engeland nu zo’n 28,5 miljoen auto’s waarvan 1.107 exemplaren voorzien zijn van een elektrische aandrijflijn. Britse kopers van een elektrische auto kunnen 5.000 pond (omgerekend 5.678 euro) vergoed krijgen van de Britse overheid voor de aanschaf van een elektro-auto. De regeling leek effectief, want in het eerste kwartaal van 2011 werden 465 elektrische auto’s op naam gezet in Engeland. In het tweede kwartaal daalde de verkoop van elektrische auto’s ook al naar 216 verkochte exemplaren.
Groene revolutie
Volgens Phillip Hammond, de voormalige Britse secretaris van transport, is de dalende verkoop slechts een tijdelijk fenomeen. “We gaan een groene revolutie tegemoet. 2011 kan in de geschiedenisboeken komen als het jaar dat de elektrische auto doorbreekt. De investering in het betaalbaar maken van elektrisch rijden en het faciliteren van oplaadpunten zijn een essentieel om dit te bereiken.”
Beperkt aanbod
Norman Baker, de opvolger van Hammond, denkt dat er nog niet genoeg elektrische auto’s op de markt zijn. “De consument kan slechts kiezen uit een klein aantal merken dat modellen aanbied met elektrische aandrijving. Het is onzin om te denken dat de Britse consument geen interesse heeft in elektrische auto’s. Ik ben ervan overtuigd dat als er meer kwalitatieve elektrische auto’s op de markt komen dat de verkoop zal toenemen.”
Begin volgend jaar beslist de Britse overheid over het voortbestaan van de subsidieregeling voor de aankoop van elektrische auto’s.
