Inductieladen is misschien wel de nieuwe standaard
Het zou zomaar kunnen dat we in de nabije toekomst geen stekkers, snoeren of kabels meer nodig hebben om dingen op te laden. Inductieladen is in opkomst. Niet alleen voor smartphones en andere kleine apparaten, maar ook voor auto’s.
Inductieladen is eigenlijk gewoon een ander woord voor draadloos opladen. De elektriciteit wordt niet via een kabel getransporteerd, maar met behulp van een magnetisch veld. Dat veld wordt ontwikkeld tussen twee magnetische spoelen, waarvan er één in de auto en één in het laadplatform is geplaatst. Inductieladen werkt met wisselstroom, die in de auto nog moet worden omgezet naar gelijkstroom.
Inductielaadsystemen voor voertuigen hebben een beveiliging, waardoor de elektriciteit alleen wordt overgebracht wanneer er een voertuig op de laadplaats staat en er zich geen voorwerpen tussen inductieplaats en de ontvanger van de auto bevinden. Inductieladen klinkt misschien futuristisch, maar zonder dat we er bij stilstaan maken veel (kleine) elektronische apparaten er al jaren gebruik van. Elektrische tandenborstels bijvoorbeeld, maar ook steeds meer smartphones zijn geschikt voor inductieladen.

Praktische voordelen inductieladen
De nieuwste ontwikkeling is dat ook steeds meer autofabrikanten inductieladen zien als een goed alternatief voor opladen met laadpalen en stekkers. Inductieladen heeft een aantal praktische voordelen. Eventueel gedoe met verschillende soorten stekkerverbindingen vervalt bijvoorbeeld. Op straat hoeven niet allemaal afzonderlijke laadpalen geplaatst te worden, waarmee een inductielaadplaats samen met het ontbreken van laadsnoeren minder ‘straatbeeldverstorend’ is. Tot slot is een inductieplaats veel minder vandalismegevoelig dan een laadpaal.

Nu al mogelijk
Inductieladen voor het opladen van elektrische auto’s zou in de nabije toekomst de nieuwe standaard kunnen worden. Utrecht heeft dit systeem al voor een aantal stadsbussen. In Rotterdam is in 2016 en 2017 een proef gedaan om dit systeem in de praktijk te testen voor auto’s. Dit werd gedaan met elektrische gemeenteauto’s, die voor het inductieladen overigens wel aangepast moesten worden. Het is namelijk niet mogelijk om een ‘stekkerauto’ zomaar via inductie op te laden.
Aanpassen is eenvoudig, maar (voorlopig?) wel prijzig. BMW levert sinds kort wel een losse ‘inductiepad’ voor de plug-in hybrideversie van de 5 Serie, voor 3.330 euro exclusief installatie. In de VS levert Plugless voor zo’n 1.200 tot 2.000 dollar een inductiesysteem, dat bij enkele specifieke typen elektrische auto’s is in te bouwen. Ook Bosch biedt in de VS een achteraf in te bouwen systeem aan. Mercedes-Benz werkt ook aan een dergelijk systeem, maar levert dit nog niet.

Opladen tijdens het rijden?
Wat als niet alleen de parkeerplaats, maar de hele weg van inductietechniek wordt voorzien? Dit is nog toekomstmuziek voor de lange termijn, maar wordt wel door verschillende partijen onderzocht. Op papier biedt het grote voordelen: op- of bijladen kan gewoon tijdens het rijden, dus geen gedoe meer met laadplaatsen zoeken of laadsessies moeten inplannen. In 2015 werd in Engeland op afgesloten terrein een praktijktest gedaan met een inductieweg, tests op de openbare weg staan in de planning.
Nadelen inductieladen
Een van de belangrijkste nadelen van inductietechniek zijn voorlopig de kosten. Een inductieweg zoals hiervoor beschreven kost bijvoorbeeld al gauw zo’n 300.000 tot 500.000 euro per kilometer, zo blijkt uit onderzoek naar de techniek door de TU Delft. Een openbare inductielaadplaats kost al drie keer meer dan een gewone laadpaal. Een privé-inductieplaats zoals eerder genoemd gaat daarentegen prijstechnisch redelijk gelijk op met een privélaadpaal.
Een tweede nadeel van de inductietechniek is de efficiëntie. Als elektriciteit via een kabel wordt overgebracht naar de auto treedt er geen noemenswaardig energieverlies op, terwijl er bij inductieladen zo’n 20% energie verloren gaat doordat de elektriciteit via de lucht wordt overgebracht.
