Niet voor lange afstanden, wel voor puur rijplezier
De elektrisch aangedreven BMW i3 is vernieuwd. Maar dat niet alleen, want voor het eerst is er een tweede uitvoering aan het aanbod toegevoegd: de sportief getinte BMW i3s.
Unieke auto
De BMW i3 is misschien wel de opmerkelijkste elektrische auto van dit moment. Hij ziet eruit alsof hij twintig jaar te vroeg is ontworpen en het interieur is met geen enkel ander model te vergelijken. En hij valt goed in de smaak. De eerste volledig elektrisch aangedreven BMW heeft wereldwijd veel kopers overtuigd en het Duitse merk veel nieuwe klanten bezorgd. Maar sinds de introductie van de BMW i3 is veel veranderd in de wereld van elektrisch rijden.
Vrijwel elk volumemerk lanceert binnenkort een EV of heeft recentelijk een elektrisch model op de markt gebracht. Het aantal concurrenten neemt snel toe en de batterijtechniek ontwikkelt zich in rap tempo.
Wat is nieuw?
Om de verkoop van de ‘relatief oude’ BMW i3 op gang te houden, werd het model op tal van punten vernieuwd. Het model keerde terug naar de tekentafel en kreeg onder meer nieuwe bumpers, nieuwe koplampen met standaard led-techniek en nieuwe led-richtingaanwijzers in de voorbumper.
Het infotainmentsysteem is geüpgraded en te bedienen via de nieuwste generatie van het iDrive systeem. Het beeldscherm is nu 10,25 inch groot en gebruikers hebben toegang tot nieuwe digitale diensten. Verder zijn er nieuwe kleuren en wieldesigns aan het aanbod toegevoegd om de BMW i3 nog aantrekkelijker te maken.
Met de ‘s’ van sportief
Het grootste nieuws is de lancering de BMW i3s, waarmee de BMW i3 voor het eerst leverbaar is in twee smaken. De i3s is een sportievere variant met een onderscheidende uitstraling. Deze is te herkennen aan de zwarte dakrand, afwijkende voorbumper met zwarte inzet, zwarte wielkastranden en 20-inch lichtmetalen wielen met 20 mm bredere banden.
De BMW i3s is ook voorzien van een iets krachtigere elektromotor. Die stuurt 135 kW (184 pk) vermogen en 270 Nm koppel naar de achterwielen, terwijl de reguliere versie het met 125 kW (170 pk) en 250 Nm moet doen.
Het 10 mm verlaagde sportonderstel met specifieke aanpassingen en de sterk verbeterde tractiecontrole zorgen voor een nog strakker weggedrag in bochten. De snellere reactie op het gaspedaal en directere besturing in de Sport-modus, die is te selecteren via de Driving Experience Control-schakelaar, maakt het sportieve feestje compleet.
Puur rijplezier
De accucapaciteit is ongewijzigd. In de bodem van de BMW i3s ligt een 33 kWh-accu waarmee je in de praktijk – bij een gematigde rijstijl en gemiddelde temperaturen – ongeveer 200 km moet kunnen rijden.
Je zou denken dat je daarmee bij voorbaat kansloos bent gezien de veel grotere actieradius van nieuwe EV’s. Maar dat ligt bij de BMW i3 toch anders.
De BMW i3s is niet geschikt om lange afstanden te overbruggen, laten we eerlijk zijn. Maar daartegenover staat een partij rijplezier dat zijn weerga niet kent. Rijden in de BMW i3s is een groot feest, iedere keer weer!
In de sportiefste rijstand (Sport+) schiet de BMW i3s van 0 naar 100 km/u in 6,9 seconden, maar het voelt veel sneller. De reactie op het stroompedaal is furieus. Maar het is vooral het bochtenwerk waar de BMW i3s zijn klasse toont. De besturing en wegligging zijn fantastisch! De BMW i3s zorgt voor een grote glimlach op het gezicht van bestuurders die houden van autorijden.
Beperkte actieradius
Maar sportief rijden kent ook nadelen, want de batterij is in no-time leeg. Een paar keer voluit accelereren en je bent zo 30 a 40 km actieradius kwijt. De topsnelheid is in de i3s weliswaar verhoogd van 150 naar 160 km/u, maar snelwegen wil je het liefst vermijden want die vreten de batterij ook razendsnel leeg.
Met behulp van de Eco-stand kun je de actieradius iets oprekken. Handig in druk stadsverkeer en als je de airco niet nodig hebt (want die schakelt uit). Maar een BMW i3s koop je niet om continu rustig te rijden om het maximale uit de accu te halen. Dan zijn er zat alternatieven.
Conclusie: de BMW i3s ideaal voor automobilisten die op zoek zijn naar een stijlvolle premium auto die veel waarde hechten aan rijplezier, voornamelijk korte stukken rijden en bereid zijn de auto vaak aan een laadpaal te hangen. Want dat is bij de BMW i3 wel nodig.
Opladen
Over opladen gesproken: de vernieuwde BMW i3 wordt geleverd met een verbeterde laadkabel. En als je thuis of op werk een BMW i Wallbox laat installeren, kun je daarmee snelladen met vermogens tot 11 kW. In drie uur heb je dan 180 kilometer actieradius bijgeladen. Via een huishoudelijk stopcontact (10A/240V) duurt het ongeveer 11 uur om de batterij tot 80% op te laden.
De BMW i3s is geen topper op het gebied van rijbereik, maar zonder twijfel één van de leukste elektrische auto’s om mee te rijden. De vernieuwde BMW i3 staat in de showroom voor prijzen vanaf 40 mille. De i3s is er vanaf 44 mille.
