Nu de productie van de elektrische Audi e-tron SUV op volle toeren draait, is het tijd om het aanbod verder uit te breiden met de e-tron ‘S’. Deze versie is op veel punten aangepast en nadrukkelijk ontwikkeld voor extra sportieve prestaties.
Audi e-tron S
De nieuwe Audi e-tron S is de eerste in serie geproduceerde elektrische auto met drie elektromotoren, waarvan één op de vooras en twee op de achteras. Onder normale omstandigheden wordt de Audi e-tron S alleen aangedreven door de achterste elektromotoren. De voorste motor schakelt bij als de bestuurder meer power vraagt en als de auto grip dreigt te verliezen.
Bij volgas met de transmissie in de S-stand kunnen de elektromotoren gedurende acht seconden alles geven wat ze in huis hebben: 370 kW (503 pk) vermogen en 973 Nm trekkracht. Dat is aanzienlijk meer dan bij de Audi e-tron 55 met 300 kW en 664 Nm en goed voor een sprint van 0-100 km/u in 4,5 seconden. De topsnelheid is begrensd op 210 km/u.
De elektromotoren worden gevoed door een 95 kWh-batterij met een bruikbare capaciteit van 86 kWh, waarmee de Audi e-tron S een afstand van zo’n 360 kilometer kan rijden (voorlopige cijfers).
Het voordeel van twee elektromotoren op de achteras (één per wiel) is dat die hun kracht zeer nauwkeurig naar de wielen kunnen sturen. Zelfs zo nauwkeurig, dat een mechanisch sperdifferentieel niet eens nodig is.
Het systeem reageert in milliseconden en kan zeer hoge koppelniveaus aan. Met de ESP in de Sport-stand staat en het Audi Drive Select-systeem in de Dynamic-stand kun je met de Audi e-tron S zelfs gecontroleerd driften.

Aerodynamica
Verder kun je rekenen op progressieve besturing en een speciaal sportonderstel met adaptieve luchtvering. Afhankelijk van de rijstand varieert de rijhoogte over een afstand van 76 mm. De Audi e-tron S rolt standaard op 20-inch lichtmetalen wielen met 285 mm brede banden, maar 21- en 22-inch wielen zijn optioneel. Op de voorwielen zijn extra krachtige remklauwen met zes zuigers gemonteerd. Gelukkig maar, want de Audi e-tron weegt meer dan 2 ton.
Tot slot is de Audi e-tron S voorzien van wielkasten met een gepatenteerd ontwerp dat de aerodynamica aanzienlijk verbetert. Dat geldt ook voor de automatisch sluitbare luchtinlaten voor de koeling van de voorste remmen. Die inlaten blijven zoveel mogelijk gesloten, zodat de lucht optimaal en nagenoeg zonder turbulentie over de motorkap stroomt. Ze worden alleen geopend als het echt nodig is.
