Op 14 oktober 2016 verbrak de 1.360 pk sterke elektrische supercar NIO EP9 het ronderecord voor elektrische voertuigen op de Nürburgring Nordschleife (7 minuten en 5,12 seconden). Een video van de complete ronde werd echter nooit vrijgegeven. Tot nu dan.

Dezelfde NIO EP9 verbrak in februari 2017 ook het record voor de snelste autonoom rijdende elektrische auto op het Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas. Hij deed er 2 minuten en 40,33 seconden over en haalde een topsnelheid van 256 km/u, zónder bestuurder.
