Laden wanneer het kan
De belangrijkste les na een paar weken rondrijden in de Jaguar I-Pace: wie overstapt op elektrisch autorijden moet vooral anders leren denken. Officieel is de batterijcapaciteit goed van 470 kilometer, de praktijk is heel wat weerbarstiger. Of dat heel erg is? De reikwijdte van pakweg 300 kilometer (afhankelijk van omstandigheden en rijgedrag kan dat – veel – hoger of – beduidend – lager uitvallen) is op zichzelf geen enkel probleem, mits je maar op tijd laadt. En praktisch gesproken betekent dat dat je elke keer dat je de auto parkeert dit bij voorkeur doet bij een laadpaal.
Fenomenale rijkwaliteiten
Over de rijkwaliteiten van de Jaguar I-Pace kunnen we kort zijn: fenomenaal. De twee elektromotoren boven de vóór- en de achteras leveren samen 400 pk en een koppel van 696 Nm. De auto weegt dan weliswaar ruim twee ton, met een dergelijk vermogen kun je natuurlijk ruimschoots mee in het verkeer. De energie zit opgeslagen in het lithium-ion batterij pakket, goed voor 90 kWh.
Bovengemiddeld weggedrag
Ook op slingerende wegen maakt het weggedrag indruk. Er is leentjebuur gespeeld bij andere modellen uit de stal om het beste te verenigen. Zo komt de vooras van de F-Type, de achteras van de F-Pace. In combinatie zorgen ze ervoor dat de nagenoeg geheel uit aluminium vervaardigde I-Pace een bovengemiddeld weggedrag vertoont hoewel het zeker geen sportwagen is. De standaard aanwezige vierwielaandrijving draagt daar uiteraard ook aan bij. Dat maakt deze auto ook geschikt voor het terrein, mocht iemand daar behoefte aan hebben. Wie wil, kan kiezen voor luchtvering, wat natuurlijk bijdraagt aan een nog betere verwerking van oneffenheden.

Gewoon een mooie auto
De Jaguar I-Pace is vooral gewoon een mooie auto, die qua uiterlijk het beste valt te omschrijven als een SUV Coupé. De oplopende taillelijn maakt de I-Pace herkenbaar als een telg van de familie van de Britse roofkat, slank en stoer tegelijk en voorzien van een relatief korte neus. En dat komt het interieur dan weer ten goede, want de I-Pace biedt veel binnenruimte.
Doorbreken
Op de elektronica is bepaald niet bezuinigd, standaard worden onder meer noodstopsysteem, actieve rijstrookassistentie en verkeersbord- en vermoeidheidsherkenning geleverd. Bedienbaar via twee overzichtelijke aanraakschermen, maar naar keuze ook met je stem. De optielijst biedt eventueel adaptieve cruise control en dode hoek signalering. Wie dat leuk vindt kan de stilte (door het ontbreken van motorgeluid) in het interieur doorbreken door een kunstmatige ingreep, dan klinkt er een soort gebrom.
Aerodynamica
Er is heel veel tijd gestoken in de ontwikkeling van de aerodynamica. Dat dient een meerledig doel: een lage luchtweerstand draagt bij aan een groter bereik en luchtstromen zorgen via slimme koetswerkopeningen, actieve lamellen en diverse spoilers voor koeling van het batterijpakket. Dat staat de auto goed.
Aanpassing gevraagd
Na al dat fraais moeten we vooral niet vergeten dat de I-Pace een elektrische auto is. En ja, zoals al gemeld: dat vraagt om aanpassing. Tanken van brandstof is nooit een probleem, er is altijd wel een pomp in de buurt. Maar laden van elektriciteit is een ander verhaal. Natuurlijk, Nederland telt al duizenden openbare laadpalen en dat aantal groeit. Wie een verre rit maakt met deze Jaguar moet tussenstops plannen, dat is duidelijk.
Openbare laadstations
Wie thuis noch op het werk laadmogelijkheden heeft is aangewezen op die openbare laadstations. Laden via het stopcontact vergt hoe dan ook heel veel uren. Via de app kun je dan weliswaar dat laden in de gaten houden, het schiet gewoon niet op. En zo kon het gebeuren dat wij tijdens de testperiode ’s avonds laat op een verder verlaten station langs de snelweg een half uurtje aan de snellader hingen. Ongezellig, omdat de bijbehorende koffieshop al gesloten was. Een andere keer moesten we overdag geduld oefenen omdat voor ons twee wachtenden stonden en verder rijden gezien de resterende batterijlading geen optie was. Dan ben je al gauw meer dan een uur kwijt met wachten.
Klagen hoeft echt niet
Na de eerste levering heeft Jaguar veel kritiek gekregen op de lange laadtijd en de tegenvallende capaciteit van de batterijen. Wie de auto heeft uitgerust met de aanbevolen 18-inch wielen en zijn rijgedrag aanpast hoeft echt niet te klagen. Dan kun je echt rond de 300 kilometer afleggen als het buiten fris is en zeker 20 procent meer als de temperaturen wat oplopen. Wie zich aanpast hoeft niets te vrezen. De slimme rijder maakt optimaal gebruik van bijvoorbeeld het single-pedal driving, waarbij de bij het (af)remmen vrijkomende energie wordt opgeslagen in de batterij. En ga niet jachten en jagen, dat vreet stroom.
Laad wanneer het kan
Maar het meest verstandige advies: laad wanneer het kan. Zorg ervoor dat je de batterijen zo vol mogelijk houdt. Want als je zonder stroom strandt heb je echt een probleem, een jerrycan volladen met ampères gaat gewoon niet. Van mensen die minimaal 80.000 euro neertellen voor een auto (daar begint de prijslijst van de I-Pace) mag je verwachten dat ze dat begrijpen en waarderen.
