McLaren ontwikkelingsdirecteur Dan Parry-Williams heeft tegen AutoCar verklapt dat de Britse sportautobouwer al een volledig elektrisch prototype heeft.
Hindernissen
Productieplannen zijn er op dit moment nog niet, omdat er volgens McLaren nog te veel hindernissen zijn. “We willen kijken hoe we rijplezier kunnen blijven leveren. We hebben nog een hele weg te gaan voordat we met een productiemodel kunnen komen.”
Hybride
Volgens Parry-Williams is vooral de batterij het probleem. Een elektrische auto met een actieradius van 500 kilometer is na een half uur circuitgebruik helemaal leeg. “Daarna moet je de auto weer opladen. De hoeveelheid energie die je nodig hebt om hoge prestaties op een circuit neer te zetten is verbijsterend.” Dus nee, verwacht binnen een aantal jaar geen volledig elektrische McLaren. Vanaf 2022 is de helft van alle verkochte McLarens wel een hybride.
