Door de opkomst van batterij-elektrische auto’s zijn er vragen ontstaan over hoe lang een accu van een elektrische auto mee kan gaan. Want waar een brandstofmotor met goed onderhoud over de jaren redelijk constant presteert, is er bij een autobatterij altijd sprake van accudegradatie. De capaciteit neemt daardoor na verloop van tijd iets af. Hoe zit dat precies? En welke accu is de beste keuze?
Accudegradatie
Het is een bekend fenomeen. Je koopt een nieuwe smartphone. In het begin gaat de batterij tot wel twee dagen mee. Maar als de telefoon wat ouder wordt, moet je hem ook wat vaker opladen. De batterij is namelijk eerder leeg. Dat komt door accudegradatie. Accudegradatie verwijst naar het geleidelijke verlies van opslagcapaciteit en prestaties in een accu over tijd. Dit is een natuurlijk en onvermijdelijk proces dat invloed heeft op alle soorten oplaadbare accu’s, inclusief die in elektrische voertuigen (EV’s), mobiele telefoons, laptops en andere elektronische apparaten.
Naarmate een accu ouder wordt en meer oplaadcycli ondergaat, neemt zijn vermogen om elektrische energie op te slaan en vrij te geven af. Dit betekent dat de accu minder lang meegaat tussen oplaadbeurten of dat de actieradius van een elektrische auto afneemt.
Tips om levensduur batterij te verlengen
Wil je een elektrische auto kopen? Dan zijn er tips om de accuduur te verlengen. Het scheelt bijvoorbeeld al veel door de batterij te gebruiken tussen de 20 en 80 procent. In die bandbreedte laadt een accupakket ook bijzonder snel op. De laatste 20 procent duren altijd bijzonder lang. Verder is het verstandig – helemaal bij lithium-ion-batterijen – om de batterij niet helemaal leeg te rijden. Dat vindt dit type accu namelijk niet fijn.
Snelladen? Alleen als het echt moet
Snelladen kan, maar doe je liever niet. Want ook dat is niet heel goed voor een batterij. Opladen met normale laadkracht is veel ‘gezonder’ voor een autobatterij. Ook extreem hoge of lage temperaturen kunnen schadelijk zijn voor accu’s en hun levensduur verkorten. Voertuigen en apparaten die in zeer hete of koude klimaten worden gebruikt, kunnen sneller accudegradatie ervaren.
Garantie op accucapaciteit
Door dus slim om te gaan met je batterij kan je de levensduur verlengen. Vaak geeft een fabrikant ook garantie op de accucapaciteit. In het algemeen gaat het om garantie van 8 jaar of 200.000 kilometer waarbij de fabrikant belooft dat er na die periode nog 70 procent van de oorspronkelijke accucapaciteit beschikbaar is.
Gebruik
De levensduur van de accu van een elektrische auto kan variëren afhankelijk van verschillende factoren, zoals het merk en model van de auto, het type accu, hoe de auto wordt gebruikt en hoe vaak de accu wordt opgeladen en ontladen. Over het algemeen wordt geschat dat de accu’s van elektrische auto’s tussen de 8 en 20 jaar mee kunnen gaan voordat hun capaciteit significant afneemt.
Minder actieradius
Naarmate de technologie vordert, verbeteren ook de levensduur en de prestaties van de accu’s. Zo wordt nu geschat dat een accu minder dan 20 procent van zijn capaciteit verliest tijdens de eerste 500.000 kilometer. Het is belangrijk om te benadrukken dat de levensduur van een accu niet betekent dat de accu na deze periode volledig onbruikbaar is. Het betekent eerder dat de accu niet langer in staat is om een aanzienlijk percentage (vaak rond de 80%) van zijn oorspronkelijke capaciteit te behouden, wat kan leiden tot een verminderde actieradius van de auto.
Hoge en lage temperaturen
Wat leert al deze informatie ons? Onderhoud en juist gebruik kunnen ook een grote invloed hebben op de levensduur van de accu. Het vermijden van volledig opladen tot 100% en niet laten afnemen tot 0%, evenals het vermijden van blootstelling aan extreem hoge of lage temperaturen, kunnen helpen de levensduur van de accu te verlengen.
Samenstelling batterij
In de nabije toekomst komen er ook zogeheten Solid State Batterijen aan. Die zijn lichter, hebben een hogere energiedichtheid en verliezen minder snel hun capaciteit ten opzichte van lithium-ion batterijen. In de wereld van autobatterijen bestaan er grote verschillen over de samenstelling. Neem de batterij van BYD, een automerk dat 100% elektrische auto’s produceert. BYD levert de zogeheten Blade Battery. Die batterij is ontwikkeld op basis van lithium-ijzerfosfaat (LFP).
Levensduur batterij
Los van alle technische voordelen, zoals de veiligere warmte- en koeling-eigenschappen, heeft deze batterij nog een voordeel: de accu bevat geen nikkel en kobalt! Om die reden maken ook andere EV-bouwers gebruik van BYD-batterijen. Dankzij de slimme constructie van deze batterijen hebben deze batterijen een hogere energiedichtheid. Met meer dan 5.000 laad- en ontlaadcycli biedt de Blade Battery ook een extra lange levensduur. Dat is natuurlijk interessant als je in de markt bent voor een elektrische auto.
