Autotest – Mercedes-Benz EQ Power – Comeback van de plug-in hybrid
Een pleidooi voor de plug-in!
Steeds strengere wetgeving zorgt dat automakers naarstig opzoek moeten naar schonere technieken. Vanaf 2020 mogen personenauto’s namelijk niet meer dan 95 gram CO2 per kilometer uitstoten. De meeste modellen zitten daar nog fors boven. Hoe los je dit op als automaker? Volledig elektrische auto’s maken is een optie, maar deze zijn niet in ieder land populair of praktisch. De plug-in-hybrid-hype was al een tijdje over, maar lijkt nu een gedwongen comeback te maken. In Frankfurt maken we kennis met de nieuwe plug-in hybrid line-up van Mercedes-Benz.
95 gram C02 per kilometer
Mercedes-Benz zet al een tijd flink in op volledig elektrische auto’s. Denk aan de volledig elektrische Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic, de eVito en de EQV MPV. Deze volledige elektrische modellen trekken echter de gemiddelde C02 uitstoot van de overige modellen nog niet genoeg omlaag.
Vanaf 2020 mogen personenauto’s namelijk niet meer dan 95 gram CO2 per kilometer uitstoten. Per verkochte auto die daarboven zit moet het merk 95 euro boete betalen. Dit kan oplopen tot 34 miljard euro.
Werk aan de winkel
Voor veel merken is er dus werk aan de winkel. Het produceren van volledig elektrische auto’s en plug-in hybrids is eigenlijk de enige oplossing om de boetes te ontlopen.
Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) wist van te voren al dat ze de CO2-norm niet gingen halen, en waren zo slim om het wagenpark via een legale wettelijke-loophole bij die van Tesla te voegen. Hoeveel ze daarvoor betalen is niet duidelijk, maar het zal in ieder geval niet 34 miljard zijn geweest.
EQ Power
Mercedes-Benz pakt het anders aan. Onder het EQ Power label zet Mercedes nu weer een fors deel van het modellengamma om in plug-in hybrid varianten. Van compacte modellen, zoals de A- en de B-Klasse, maar ook modellen in het luxesegment zoals de GLE en GLC.
Krachtbron
De nieuwe plug-in varianten van Mercedes zijn uiteraard zeer zuinig en stoten weinig CO2 uit. Wie denkt dat ze daarom geen pit hebben heeft het behoorlijk mis. De B250e en een A250e zijn voorzien van een 1.3-liter turbomotor met 160 pk. De elektromotor is geïntegreerd in achttrapsautomaat. Samen zijn deze goed voor 218 pk en 450 Nm koppel. In 6.7 seconden zit je al op de 100 km/u. Prima cijfers dus.
Bijzonder grote batterij
De batterij in de EQ Power A- en B-Klasse is bijzonder groot voor een plug-in hybrid, namelijk 15.8 kWh. Nog niet zo lang geleden was dit bijna de norm voor volledige elektrische auto’s. Denk aan de eerste generatie Nissan Leaf (24 kWH) en Renault Zoe (22 kWh). De batterij geeft de A- en B-Klasse een volledig elektrische actieradius van 77 kilometer (WLTP).
AC-laden gaat met 7.2 kW. Binnen twee uur zit de accu weer vol. DC-snelladen is ook een mogelijkheid. Iets wat we overigens niet vaak zien bij een plug-in hybrid. Denk echter niet aan Tesla Supercharger snelheden. Snelladen gaat met 24 kW. De accu zit zo toch nog in een half uurtje vol. Het eindresultaat van dit efficiënte samenspel? 33 gram C02-uitstoot per kilometer.
Soepele acceleratie
In Frankfurt stappen we in de A- en B-Klasse EQ Power plug-in hybrids: de B250e en een A250e. Bij het wegrijden valt de rust en stilte direct op. De elektromotor zorgt voor een soepele en snelle acceleratie.
Wie het gaspedaal diep indrukt zet de traditionele turbomotor aan het werk. Op de autobahn net buiten Frankfurt zitten we voordat we het doorhebben op snelheden die in Nederland tot fikse boetes leiden.
De elektromotor en 1,3-liter turbomotor werken naadloos samen. Tot 140km/u rijden deze plug-in hybrids volledig elektrisch. Via het MBUX-systeem kan je kiezen uit verschillende rijmodi. Comfort modus zorgt voor een prettige rijervaring, waar de nadruk op elektrisch rijden ligt. In sport modus horen we de turbomotor ineens weer en merken we dat de auto een stuk agressiever reageert.
Via pedalen achter het stuur valt de mate van regeneratief remmen in te stellen. Op het meest krachtige niveau is one peddle driving mogelijk. Wanneer het gaspedaal losgelaten wordt remt de auto helemaal af tot hij stilstaat.
Het praktisch nut
Een plug-in hybrid is een prima compromis dus. Het blijft een duurzaam alternatief op een traditionele auto. Er gaat nog wel benzine of diesel in, maar daar gaat de traditionele verbrandingsmotor efficiënt mee om, in samenwerking met het batterijenpakket en de elektromotor.
De wereld is groter dan Nederland
Natuurlijk zijn volledig elektrische auto’s nog schoner. Maar Mercedes maakt niet alleen auto’s voor Nederland. In ons land schieten de laadpalen en snellaadstations uit de grond, maar niet overal wordt elektrisch rijden zo massaal omarmd. Probeer deze laadpalen en snellaadstations maar eens te vinden in moderne Europese landen als Spanje, Italië of Frankrijk. En dan bedoelen we zonder dat je elke dag zorgvuldig je route moeten uitstippelen, maar echt dagelijks gebruik zonder planning.
Genoeg range
De meeste Nederlanders hebben dagelijks genoeg aan de 60 tot 70 daadwerkelijke volledig elektrische kilometers die de Mercedes-Benz A- en B-Klasse plug-in hybrids bieden. De EQ Power GLE 350de 4MATIC kan door een accupakket van 31 kWh zelfs 106 kilometer (WLTP) volledig elektrisch rijden.
Het is natuurlijk erg mooi dat steeds meer elektrische auto’s een range van 400 kilometer hebben, maar dit wordt hooguit een paar keer per jaar echt benut. In veel gevallen helemaal nooit. Het is daarnaast natuurlijk ook fijn om te weten dat je altijd genoeg rijbereik hebt, maar de gemiddelde Nederlandse auto rijdt maar 32 kilometer per dag. 32!
Zou het niet fijn zijn als al die gemiddelde miljoenen Nederlandse auto’s ook allemaal wat duurzamer zouden rijden? Mercedes-Benz biedt dat met de nieuwe EQ Power modellen aan. De plug-in hybrid lijkt nog steeds een prima optie dus.

Nu nog veel meer laadpalen plaatsen en regels versimpelen zodat de mensen thuis voor de deur kunnen laden.
Alleen maar omdat deze phev’s vaker aan de laadpaal moeten dan een ev.
Daardoor rijden deze nu vaker op benzine dan op stroom.
Ik zie de ratio van deze move wel in, maar je betaalt als koper wel voor een extra verbrandingsmotor ten opzichte van een echte EV. Dat is een investering die je nooit meer terugkrijgt als je straks inruilt. De prijskloof tussen PHEV en EV zal snel groter worden en uiteindelijk de PHEVs uit de markt prijzen tenzij deze een actieradius van 100 km elektrisch kunnen bieden.
