Autotest – Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic (2019)
Een zwaargewicht, op diverse fronten
De eerste elektro-SUV van Mercedes-Benz is een feit. Hij luistert naar de naam Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic. Hij heeft de afmetingen van een GLC en de prestaties van een AMG, maar waarom zou je voor een EQC moeten kiezen? In Noorwegen – een land waar de elektro-auto door overheidsstimulering een marktaandeel heeft van vijftig procent – speuren we naar een antwoord.
Concurrenten
Er verschijnen steeds meer middelgrote elektrische SUV’s op de markt. We kennen natuurlijk al de Tesla Model X die als Standard Range minimaal 87.100 euro kost. Maar tegenwoordig staan er ook modellen als de Jaguar I-Pace (vanaf 81.800 euro) en Audi e-tron (vanaf 84.100 euro) in de showroom. Een elektrische BMW iX3 – die al te reserveren is – volgt medio 2020. Vanaf oktober 2019 levert Mercedes-Benz de EQC 400 4Matic uit aan de eerste kopers. Voor nu draagt de EQC met een vanafprijs van 80.995 euro de titel ‘de voordeligste’.
Concessies
Leuke binnenkomer, maar met een EQC doe je wel een paar concessies. Het zicht rondom is door smalle raampartijen en relatief kleine zijspiegels bijvoorbeeld vrij beperkt. Een smalle achterruit en een dikke C- en D-stijl beperken het zicht naar achteren. Gelukkig heeft de EQC diverse camera’s die dat beperkte zicht rondom compenseren.

Opladen
Opladen is ook een dingetje, want net als bij de Jaguar I-Pace behoort driefasenladen niet tot de mogelijkheden. Opladen aan een publieke laadpaal of thuis aan het stopcontact duurt dus lang. Met 7,4 kW laadkracht is je batterij na ongeveer 11 uur opgeladen. Met een normaal stopcontact mag je rekenen op zo’n 20 uur. Opladen bij een snellader (DC) gaat een stuk sneller (tot 110 kW). In 40 minuten is de batterij dan van 10 tot 80 procent opgeladen. De Tesla Model X en Audi e-tron lopen op het gebied van opladen voor op deze EQC. Slim rijden en laden dus, met die EQC.
652 kilogram
Het lithium-ion accupakket van de EQC heeft een capaciteit van 80 kWh en weegt 652 kilogram. Niet heel raar dus dat de EQC een totaalgewicht heeft van een stevige 2.495 kilogram. De batterij – geproduceerd door het Duitse Accumotive dat in handen is van Daimler – bestaat uit 384 cellen en is geplaatst in de bodemsectie van de auto. Kortom: een lekker laag zwaartepunt.

Actieradius
Op papier heeft de EQC een actieradius van 417 kilometer (WLTP). In de praktijk is 400 kilometer haalbaar onder gunstige omstandigheden en een rustige gasvoet. Met een acculading van 77 procent gaf onze testauto een resterende range aan van 302 kilometer. Voor de volledigheid: het trekgewicht bedraagt 1.800 kilogram. Ook caravanbezitters komen dus aan hun… trekken.
AMG-prestaties
Ondanks het forse wagengewicht is de 4,76 meter lange EQC nog altijd een rappe SUV. Twee elektromotoren genereren samen een piekvermogen van 408 pk (300 kW). Indrukwekkend is het koppel van 760 Nm, direct beschikbaar bij stilstand. Het zal geen verrassing zijn: de vierwielaangedreven EQC levert AMG-prestaties. Van 0 naar 100 is in 5,1 seconden afgewerkt. Uit het oogpunt van efficiency is de topsnelheid afgeregeld op 180 km/u.

Comfort
Allemaal leuk en aardig, maar in de EQC is het al snel duidelijk dat de nadruk op comfort ligt. Dat merk je vooral tijdens het rijden over drempels, waar ze in Noorwegen groot fan van zijn. De EQC weet elke ‘bult’ keurig te dempen. Neem de drempels niet met een te hoog tempo, want dan krijgen de schokbrekers door het doordrukkende gewicht een flinke opdonder. Doe maar rustig aan, dan is de EQC in z’n element.
Knap werk
Ook als het om cruisen gaat, is de EQC een heerlijke metgezel. Dat komt deels door het uitstekende meubilair en de goede verstelbaarheid van de stuurkolom en de stoelen, maar in het bijzonder ook door de stilte aan boord. Alleen wat band-, weg- en windgeluid dringt licht door in de cabine. Maar in het algemeen is de EQC extreem stil. Mercedes-Benz heeft duidelijk niet beknispeld op de geluidsisolatie. Knap werk.

Handle with care
Het interieur kennen we in grote lijnen van de GLC. Het forse digitale display komt uit de A-Klasse en is prettig afleesbaar. Het infotainmentsysteem met persoonlijke assistent ‘Hey Mercedes’ steekt goed in elkaar en is goed te bedienen. Soms is het wel zoeken naar de gewenste functie. De hoogglans zwarte afwerking van de middenconsole oogt fraai, maar is wel extreem gevoelig voor vette vingers, stof en krassen. Handle with care dus.
Ruimte aan boord
De ruimte aan boord van de EQC is in orde. Het is zeker niet de ruimste in zijn klasse, maar ook volwassenen van 1,85 meter kunnen achterin goed zitten. De achterbank kan volledig worden neergeklapt met twee handige drukknoppen in de bagageruimte. Uitgebreid boodschappen doen of grotere voorwerpen vervoeren is dus goed mogelijk.

Middentunnel
De tunnel tussen de voetenruimte achterin is een gevolg van dat de EQC zijn basis op bepaalde fronten deelt met de GLC. “Slechts 15 procent van het EQC-platform komt overeen met de GLC”, zegt Christoph Meier, onderdeel van het ontwikkelingsteam van de EQC in gesprek met AutoRAI.nl. “De EQC rolt van dezelfde band als de GLC en C-Klasse Limousine en Estate. De middentunnel bij het voetgedeelte achterin weghalen had een te grote impact op het productieproces. Vandaar dat dit moest blijven. We gebruiken de tunnel nu voor bedrading en een koelelement van het accupakket.”
Rijmodi
Mercedes-Benz geeft de EQC diverse rijmodi, te weten Comfort, Eco, Sport, Max Range en Individual. In de stand Max Range doet de auto er alles aan om zoveel mogelijk kilometers uit het accupakket te peuteren. In de stand Sport is dat wat minder relevant en levert de aandrijflijn de beste prestaties. In onze optiek is de stand Comfort de beste rijstand voor alledaagsgebruik. Gewoon een mooie mix van comfort en acceleratievermogen.
One pedal driving
Bij een elektrische auto hoor je het wel vaker: one pedal driving. Oftewel: accelereren en afremmen met het ‘gaspedaal’. Ook wel recupereren genoemd, want tijdens het vertragen wint de auto energie terug voor het accupakket. In de EQC is dat ook mogelijk. Die ‘schakelflippers’ achter het stuurwiel zitten er immers niet voor niets. Er zijn vijf standen: D Auto, D+ (coasting oftewel uitrollen), D (beperkte recuperatie), D- (gemiddelde recuperatie) en tot slot D– (hoge recuperatie). In die laatste stand is one pedal driving mogelijk. De vertraging is in die stand vrij agressief, maar met wat oefening en dus ervaring rem je de EQC keurig af met het ‘gaspedaal’. Ideaal in steden.

ECO-assistent
Ook handig is de ECO-assistent. Die gebruikt navigatiegegevens, verkeersbordherkenning en informatie uit de intelligente veiligheidsassistenten (radar en stereocamera) om de zeilfunctie en energieterugwinning aan te sturen. Ook vertelt het de bestuurder wanneer hij of zij het gaspedaal kan loslaten, bijvoorbeeld omdat er een lagere snelheidslimiet aankomt.
EQ staat voor…
De EQC is het eerste product van het nieuwe product- en technologiemerk EQ. De naam staat voor ‘electric intelligence’. Dit nieuwe submerk richt zich volledig op elektromobiliteit en bijbehorende services. De bandbreedte loopt van elektrische auto’s via wallboxen en oplaadservices tot private energieopslagunits. Mercedes-Benz verkoopt in de toekomst elektrische auto’s onder de naam EQ. Tot 2022 komt Mercedes-Benz met in totaal negen EQ-modellen. De EQC is een prima begin van Mercedes’ grote elektro-offensief.
Conclusie
Waarom? De Mercedes-Benz EQC 400 4Matic blijkt niet alleen een zwaargewicht als het gaat om pure kilo’s, maar ook op het gebied van comfort en rijgenot. Die C in de naam heeft dus een dubbele betekenis. Wie een elektrische SUV zoekt met een overvloed aan comfort, kan niet om de EQC heen. De EQC is zeker niet de ruimste. Ook het ontbreken van een driefasenlaadmogelijkheid is een gemiste kans, maar in de basis is de EQC een goed doordachte elektro-SUV.
